Hadek scratched the old metal floor of his cell with his fingers. He didn’t like being left alone for so long. Things had taken far too long for his liking. He had to prepare for the worst. And that meant he needed a plan. If he was truly on his own now, he had to set about trying to get himself away from these red-clothed fanatics before their mood changed and his throat found its way to a dagger’s edge.

He’d managed to free himself from his bindings shortly after Gilban left, and now watched the guard in front of his cage with hardened focus. He was good, too good. He wasn’t expecting that. Used to being hardly acknowledged at all, the guard’s incredible devotion to his task was unsettling . . . and frustrating. If he was going to find a way out of this mess he needed to think harder. Think.

He looked around the cage. There was nothing to help him—nothing at all. He squirmed to the back of the cell, letting his head rest against the bars. When he did, he heard a faint clunk and thought he felt a bar move slightly. Amazed, he gently pressed the bar again. It gave some but still held securely. If the guard heard anything, he didn’t react, remaining as still as a statue.

Silently and swiftly, Hadek wiggled the metal rod like it was a rotten tooth, twisting and tugging, pulling and pushing. It seemed to be loose where the bar met the metal floor of the cell. The more he played with the bar, the more a thin layer of decayed flakes of crumb-like debris appeared around its base. He steadily—and quietly—continued to work the metal rod, taking the debris brought forth as a positive sign of his success.

After some more finagling, he’d managed to work the bar loose enough so he could push it outward at a forty-five-degree angle. In very little time he was able to push the bar out of the top slot holding it in place.

This created an opening just wide enough to squeeze his small frame through. He made a last check on the guard. Amazingly, his captor remained still. Maybe he was finally getting a little lazy. Hadek exhaled a deep breath, then shimmied through the opening. He was out of the cage and running free in a heartbeat.

He got no more than thirty yards before he wondered where he should go next. Did he dare risk trying to find out what happened to Gilban or just look out for himself? He supposed he could do both—at least for a while.

He slowly maneuvered into a shadowed area close to an outcropping of rock that marked the beginning of the pathway between the volcanoes where he and Gilban had been captured. It would keep him hidden long enough to get his bearings and focus. He let out a slow breath, which he discovered he’d been holding for some time. He hoped he might find something that could tell him Gilban’s whereabouts, but it was a slim hope at best.
